Olympic Torch Relay in Bristol

Now that I've finally come out of my comatose state from getting up at 4am to make myself in to some kind of state to enter the public areas of the city; I shall tell you a tale of my people.

Last night was the evening celebration for the Olympic Torch Relay in Bristol, conveniently located at the Millennium Square (outside At Bristol).

Before I headed down to the celebrations I grabbed a bottle of the finest cider and managed to catch a bit of the relay down Welsh Back. It was rather bizarre to see how quickly the road went from normal service to a frenzy and back to normal service again.

I headed down to Millennium Square to see the torch come in to the amphitheatre by boat. It wasn't the best setup if you didn't have access to a ticket for the amphitheatre area as the only way you could watch was one not terribly large screen, so if you had ignunt people around you blocking your view, you'd be out of luck.

The whole thing was pretty spectacular all the same and the atmosphere was electric. I managed to get Damien out as well (we're being social today), of course we managed to get on the big screen looking disappointed but no matter, I took an equally disappointed looking photo too.

I managed to get a touch drunk and headed home about 2130 as I was aiming to get up for redonkulous time in the morning (4am).

The next morning I some how managed to pull myself out of bed feeling like death, mainly because it was the morning and less to do with the drinking.

I made my way on to College Green for 0540 as the torch was expected to go at 0554. Rather annoyingly my iPhone froze as I was trying to take photos, for some reason if your memory is under 1GB it goes to shit and stops working.

There was surprisingly a lot of people down there and when the torch came out it was very informal, people literally just piled in on the torch barer. They cleared a space and it began, I didn't get a terribly good vantage point but it was still worth being there!

After a stop off at home I headed up to Clifton to the suspension bridge to see the torch come across, I got an alright vantage point. I would have liked to be closer to the bridge but there was a pretty big crowd so I stuck where I was.

The whole atmosphere was electric and definitely worth the inevitable lag that I've had when I got home at 10am!

Hooray! Weekend, I've done so much with it and all. Well I lie, perhaps not Saturday when quite frankly my body fell apart and I had mega Delhi Belly.

I have however, put a pictorial together ~~ifthis~~ of this (wtf autocorrect?) weekend. I had to use only one stock photo as well, seeing as I couldn't be bothered to take actual photos.

Hooray for Friday, more so that it was Sam's birthday drinks in town. We all know that Friday and alcohol both go together well, so she picked a good evening!

I couldn't stay too long but we managed to at least pull off a drinking game and Bex of course dropped a drink everywhere.

I'm sure everybody by now has seen this video of the lady making a bit of a crazy sounding statement to a city ordnance. We all have thought she must be a bit mad to say such things and some harsh comments have been made against her, but it actually seems that she does indeed have a mental illness.

A quote from the story is from her brother:-

He was unaware of the video's popularity, but wasn't surprised -- he knew it would be a matter of time before she got in trouble somewhere.

He said he's disappointed the video garnered such attention and jokes without the whole story.

"To me, it shows how little society really cares about people with mental health issues," Patrick Svoboda said. "She does have a very tender heart ... but anything she says is certifiably schizophrenic ... she's not some crazy conservative."

If you think this is OK or acceptable, then you need to re-think.

As I'm sure everybody knows, I have a house spider with an epic attitude problem and perhaps a tiny bit mental.

But I got the dude back for his two legged salute a few weeks back.

I came in the bathroom switched on the light and no word of a lie the little shit jumped and legged it across the floor, turning back looking at me for a second before making a run for the bath tub.

Last night I did my birthday drinks with Rachel, Jenny, Damien, Dan, April, Chantelle, Tommy, James (for a bit), Geoff, Harriet, Tim and Tori.

The evening started off with, to quote Theresa May, preloading and of course the Nintendo NES. I fraped Rachel while she was playing as you do, but it's an alright photo!

We then collected a few more people before heading off to The Bank Tavern, it was absolutely rammed in there and there was some reports of fluctuating bar prices. While we were drinking there we noticed that Arc was also a bit rammed and a bit weird!

A few of us popped down to have a look and quizzed one of the dancers, it seems there was a Bollywood themed night going on.

We headed out to The Apple which promptly closed its outdoor area so we headed down to the Duke and made the decision to hit up omg.

That part of the evening was fairly standard, drinking to excess and dancing as you do.

Most of them managed to keep going until 3.30 but me and Harriet did the proper thing of partying all night long. I was going to leave but ended up chatting to a bloke outside and I ended up staying. More hilariously was when Harriet called me heading back in to the club and the bouncer just took my phone off me and had a random conversation with her!

Me and the newly acquired chap headed back in to the club once the bouncer declared that we should get back in and just get on with it and shag. It was much funnier in person and perhaps slightly more alcohol in the blood stream.

Spent the last half hour dancing to the classics, having odd conversations and dropping my number in to chap's phone before the club closed down for the night.

Outside I continued talking to the guy I just met, he wanted a fag so mega credit to Harriet for managing to get one for me from probably the strangest Irish people I have ever met.

After spending probably another half hour or so in the cold and wet we headed back towards home via Cheesy Chips and a few taxi drivers trying to rip her off.

I got in about 5 something and promptly fell asleep.

Oktoberfest in May?

Last night, being the actual night of my birthday (and arguably that of mother miggins - may her pies increase!), I joined Mrs Tanqueray (nee Lemon-Bold Italic) with a guest appearance from Tommy and Phil for the free entry night of the German beer festival down at Millennium Square.

I'm sure you can guess from the time I'm posting this, I'm not feeling sexy but it was worth downing 2 and a half steins of regret. I also some how managed to order a chinese takeaway under the influence. Seeing as I hadn't ate all day, it was perhaps a good idea that I did, but my bank balance wasn't best pleased!

At least this morning's venture on the buses hasn't been terribly bad, bus driver looks like she wants to eat kittens in front of a group of school children and we've only slapped the side of the bus on one inanimate object. It's not often I can say that a bus journey is remotely interesting or nice, but a few rows behind me there is perhaps the most handsome man on earth with the most amazing eyes (I'm an eye man and not in that "I want them in a jar" kind of way either).

Now here is a photo from last night, I took another few but they were terrible so I shan't let the Internet see that shit.

I'm reminded in the crappiest of times that God Hates Figs (for they are disgusting) and that the universe will take every opportunity to swiftly plant it's foot right in your bollocks.

This morning I got it, courtesy of Tesco. I was enjoying my day, perhaps too much one could argue.

I ventured in to the local Tesco Metro to purchase some items (as you do) but found a problematic self checkout that may have become self-aware. I tried to pay on my card knowing that I had sufficient funds, for I had checked it prior, only to find the now blood thirsty self checkout, claimed my card was invalid.

Now, most people would rightly assume that no payment was taken, so we hit that bad boy up a few more times before having to go to a till with the same problem.

Seeing as I'm not going to fuck around and have to pay for it, I just left everything and walked out. I passed another cash point and checked my balance, as if Tesco isn't going to take my money, Sainsbury's certainly will out of spite.

However, turns out Tesco beat us both at that game as they grabbed the funds from my "invalid" card and equally "invalid" account.

To say I wasn't pleased would be accurate, but I wasn't even angry bro.

I got to work and called Tesco, they put me through to the store manager who in no uncertain terms told me that this wasn't their problem and I had to sort it out. I made the point of saying that since they hit up the last five quid in my account I was a bit stuffed for lunch.

Turns out that ain't her problem either.

At this point, I'd go with "I was fucking livid" as an accurate description of my mood. I of course took my anger out on their twitter account and emailed my credit union to confirm that I'd been pick pocketed by Tesco.

I called Tesco again on their main customer service line and not the shop number, I spoke with somebody who although helpful and informative didn't quite follow through on my whole issue and released the fact that I wasn't the first person to have this issue with that shops self checkout.

So we go from status "fucking livid" to "utterly nuclear".

That's right, they knew this machine has a problem, they knew the signs yet I'm sent off from the shop thinking my card has just been refused. Even more of an arse is that the manager I spoke to gave me this "matter a fact"ly attitude that I should have known to speak with customer service there and then in store.

I got an email back from the credit union confirming the charge, so I emailed them back and within an hour they reversed the charge without any problems. I'm still yet to hear back from Tesco after I had another go at them for not doing their job.

The moral of the story is, you're going to be fucked over by a large company; so do something useful with your cash and move it in to a credit union. Or try and burn down a Tesco*, which ever seems easiest and most convenient to your situation.

* Please don't burn down an actual Tesco, even in Stokes Croft. That would be an un-environmental decision and a waste of perfectly good pies.

Equal Marriage and all that Jazz

Bleary eyed I wake up this morning for the usual wake up routine, check the Facebook, read about 100 emails that came in post midnight and check that the Zombie Apocolypse hasn't hit the world through the BBC News app.

All fairly standard, until I see the news story that the Catholic Education Service has been getting a bit too political for it's boots right next to Katie Price defiling the holy scanctity that they claim marriage is.Of course I made the mistake of reading the article at this time in the morning and it actually annoyed me, with particular attention to the first few lines:-

It emerged this week that the CES wrote to nearly 400 state-funded Roman Catholic schools inviting them to back a petition against gay civil marriage.

Schools and teachers are forbidden to promote one-sided political arguments.

The CES has denied breaking any laws, saying Catholic views on marriage are religious, not political.

Yes, you are correct you can hold any views you like based on your religion. However, when you get people to sign a petition to prevent others getting on with their lives, that makes it political.

The CES was also was quoted as saying ..Catholics believe that 'marriage is a high and noble vocation'... could you perhaps tell that to the Oak Finished Katie Price with her string of failed marriages and of course Britney Spears and her drunken violation of the "high and noble vocation"?

How about you have a look at the two below videos and come up with a reason why two people who love each other and been in a stable relationship for many years should be prevented from marriage; that others seem to be doing every few years with a new person just because they can.
